ME Recommends: Easter Escapism

This instalment of ME Recommends is all about the books we love getting lost in, and wholeheartedly recommend curling up with this Easter weekend - with some favourite seasonal treats, of course…

Juliet recommends…

Helen Hoang’s The Bride Test - Khai Diep’s mother decides that it’s integral that her son (who has no feelings) find a wife – so she takes matters into her own hands and finds him one herself. Esme Tran agrees to leave Vietnam and come to America to meet him, in order to turn her family’s fortunes around. But how do you seduce a man who can’t show you affection? And what happens when you fall in love with him?

This novel is sexy, sweet, and a really great depiction of neurodivergence. I LOVED it.

My go-to escapist read is always the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness. This series makes my witch’s blood sing. You have a female academic (who also rows) at the top of her game, a smart (sexy) vampire, and to top it all off, Elizabethan England is involved as well. Need I say more?

Reese’s Mini Eggs – a magical combination of chocolate and peanut butter.

Beach Read by Emily Henry – I absolutely love this fun and flirty book. It has a classic enemies to lovers storyline, and a wonderfully warm and sunny beach backdrop. Following two very different authors united by their writer's block, it is the perfect thing to curl up and read as the weather gets warmer.

Recently I loved How To Kill Your Family by Bella Mackie. The protagonist Grace has a brilliantly witty voice, and I love an antihero. Laugh-out funny, I enjoyed every minute of this book, spending time with Grace as she bumped off the horrible family that disowned her in increasingly inventive and farfetched ways.

Cadbury’s Mini Eggs – the ultimate Easter treat!

Kiya recommends…

Other People’s Clothes by Calla Henkel. Set in 2009, two American students move into a beautiful - but mysteriously cheap - apartment owned by a famous crime writer in Berlin. Hailey is obsessed with Paris Hilton, Linsday Lohan, and Amanda Knox, and is determined to become a socialite. Zoe is grieving for her childhood best friend, murdered months before in their hometown.

When strange things start happening in the apartment, the girls start to suspect that their writer landlord is watching them and using their exploits as inspiration for her next novel. Deciding to take matters into their own hands, they begin to perform for her - throwing lavish, Gatsby-style parties and quickly rising to the top of Berlin’s social scene. But things go horribly wrong, friendships are pushed to their limit, and someone ends up dead…

It’s deliciously dark, fun, and such a wild ride - I enjoyed every second of it!
