Elodie Harper and Sophie Haydock longlisted for Historical Writers’ Association Crown Awards
Elodie Harper and Sophie Haydock have been longlisted for the Historical Writers’ Association Crown Awards 2022, with their novels The Wolf Den and The Flames, respectively. The HWA Crown Awards select “36 books celebrating the best in historical writing, fiction and non-fiction, published in 2021-2022.” The shortlist will be announced on 25th October, with the winners announced at an awards ceremony on 23rd November.
The Wolf Den by Elodie Harper features on the longlist for the Gold Crown Award, and was described by the judges as “An utterly immersive and vivid recreation of life in a brothel in Roman Pompeii. An unforgettable heroine tries to survive in a brutal world.”
The Wolf Den is longlisted alongside Booth by Karen Joy Fowler, All of You Every Single One by Beatrice Hitchman, Small Things Like These by Clare Keegan, The Winter War by Tim Leach, Case Study by Graeme Macrae Burnet, The Thin Place by CD Major, The Rebel Daughter by Miranda Malins, The Fortune Men by Nadifa Mohamed, The Kingdoms by Natasha Pulley, The Great Passion by James Runcie, and Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead.
Sophie Haydock features on the Debut Crown Award longlist with The Flames, and was described by the judges as “A thought-provoking, fascinating and illuminating take on the bohemian milieu of turn of 20h-century Vienna’s incandescent life, shown through the lives of artist Egon Schiele’s four muses. Intoxicating and evocative.”
